To bring a truly greener product to the industry, AKAS Mills has developed the process of manufacture of PUL by using a treated TPU film for better adhesion and using a liquefied adhesive with no solvents.

The manufacturing process has no discharges or waste and the air also stays clean. In our proprietary process the entire surface area is covered with the adhesive that melt-bonds the film to the fabric. This makes the PUL soft handed, silent (vs crunchy), and survives at least 100 laundry hot cycles in lab testing without delaminating, or leaking, thus creating a product that is durable, flexible, and cost effective.

SOLVENT LAMINATION PROCESS

It is most ironic that re-useable diapers (which support the environment) have been using solvent based PUL manufacturing process as the discharges from the solvent process are hazmat and are detrimental to the environment. The adhesive is dissolved in a solvent, which is either Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) or Tri Choloro Ethylene (TCE) and after the lamination process, the MEK/TCE are gassed out from the laminate and have to be captured and then disposed per EPA guidelines. During the manufacturing process, the surrounding air has also to be captured and treated. MEK is known to contribute to the formation of tropospheric (ground-level) ozone and TCE has proven to have serious health hazards (www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts19.html). It has also been established that even after some gassing out, there are traces of MEK/TCE in the PUL.
